CARES for Kids: Comparing Analgesic Regimen Effectiveness and Safety after surgery for Kids
There is a lot we don't know about how to best manage pain after outpatient surgery for teens and young adults. CARES for Kids is a research study taking place in Michigan, California, and Ohio to find out more information on what is the best type of pain medication to take after surgery.

Why your participation matters

If you or your child are having surgery, such as tonsil removal, gallbladder removal, or knee scope, you can help!
Research studies have shown that patients usually receive one of two common approaches to help manage pain after surgery. However, there is much more we need to learn. First, we do not know which of the two approaches helps to relieve pain the most after surgery.
Second, we need to understand how often each approach to managing pain results in side effects.
This information is essential to help us understand which approach to managing pain is best to recommend to teens and young adults who have surgery. The CARES for Kids Study is being conducted in order to help inform these important decisions by patients, their families, and their clinicians.
What you'll be asked to do
Complete an online consent form
Consenting to participate in the study will be your first task.

Complete a short questionnaire
Once you've signed up for the study, you'll be asked a few questions about yourself directly on the CARES for Kids app or online platform.

Complete a daily symptom diary
For the 14 days after surgery, you'll be prompted to report any pain and potential side effects from pain medication you may have experienced.

Complete other short questionnaires
At 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months after surgery, you'll be asked a few questions about yourself directly on the CARES for Kids app or online platform.
ELIGIBILITY
Here's a look at groups eligible to participate in our study
Individuals age 12 to 20 years who will undergo one of these types of elective, outpatient surgeries:
